The race took place at the Shanghai Auto-Expo Park in Anting. JiuJiu VGT Triathlon Race offered three distances: VGT (100m-10km-2.3km), a Sprint and an Olympic.

There were more than 600 people registered but it didn’t feel like much on the course, maybe the rain that was forecasted few days before already discouraged some. Eventually, it rained for the swim and the bike, then rain stopped during the run and we got a full sun awards ceremony.

SWIM: VGT separate 100m course / Sprint one lap / Olympic two laps

Divided in 5 or 6 waves, it went smoothly with usual zigazing and kicking. The grey weather and the curved lines between buoys made it not easy to find your way. The water was especially muddy; we couldn’t see our hands in the water…

For VGT though, it was a bit scary. 50 beginner swimmers with floating devices starting at the same time for a 100m. Some reported other swimmers were grabbing their arms or their floating devices because they were scared…

BIKE: VGT one lap / Sprint two laps / Olympic four laps

Road were wet and it was slightly raining. Since the rain was expected, riders got more careful and this didn’t seem to be the issue. The real unexpected issue that riders experienced was a terrible strong wind almost all along the bike course. It was hard, especially the second bridge that didn’t seem much but where riders were slowing down to 25kph and less due to strong headwind.

RUN: it stopped raining when riders were about to start the run. So it got terrible hot and humid with water evaporating. Fortunately there were enough hydration station every kilometer or so.

Nice atmosphere under the sun at the finish line, concert and the awards ceremony.
