2015 the park championship Series

Very Unofficial

The bragging rights about who is the best rider around Century Park, lap-after-lap, is about to become a bit more scientific! Announcing the unofficial 2015 “Century Park Championship Series!”

This will be our inaugural year, with two sub-series combined for the park championship (not to be confused with the PudongCycling Club Championship, with the 12th edition to be announced later this year). These races are unofficial without referees, scoring sheets, etc, based purely on racer integrity. Note that is you have ever won any champion jerseys anywhere in any race, you are encouraged to wear it!

After each race, if you chose to participate, email your results to Allen ([email protected]) by 5pm on the day of the race, who will consolidate the results to share with the group. The race is open to all who show up, 5:40 am at the northeast corner of Century Park. Rain delays or cancellations are purely subject to the race marshall’s discretion.

For each race, points for the first five places will be rewarded as 10-7-5-4-3, with all participants receiving at least 2 points. All races count, while the scoring system is devised that four 1st place finishes beats five 2nd place finishes, to hopefully crown the right season park champion!

Time Trial Series

We will do one leisure lap before the race starts, rolling start. At the beginning of the second lap, starting from the top of the very first bridge, complete the specified number of laps. Time trial bikes encouraged. Keep your own time and preferably also average speed and distance. No drafting, honor system in play. Use all your expensive equipment and tight-fitting clothing, and don’t forget to shave the legs!

Sprinter’s Series

We will do one leisure lap before the race starts, rolling start. Each subsequent lap there will be one sprint, at a location to be announced before the race. You may start your sprint only after the final stoplight or otherwise designated location before the sprint, and after the sprint you must slow down to allow the peloton to re-group. Failure to do so will result in you being disqualified. This is not a circuit race! If there are safety considerations like a car interfering, that lap will be neutralized with no points awarded.

Each lap will reward points for the first three finishers on a 5-3-2 point basis, and sprint scores from the noted number of sprints will be accumulated for the champion of that day. Tie breakers will be based on the number of first, then second, then third places; if still a tie, based on the last sprint where at least one of the participants received points.

Q&A

Q: Can we have a “Mercx” category for non-aero (both bike and clothes) time trial?

A: Yes, there will be an unofficial separate ranking based on those without aero equipment.

Q: Can you clarify more on the weather delay policy?

A: If delayed, or cancelled, an announcement will be made before 8pm on the night before the race. There are no clear guidelines and the decision will be made based on the facts-and-circumstances at that point in time.

Q: How does the start work for the time trial?

A: It is a rolling start based on whenever you want to start. In principle, it starts after one warm-up lap and then counting the number of laps noted for that race. Other suggestions are welcome, and if someone wants to take two (or more) warm-up laps that is acceptable, but the race must be finished by 7:00 am on the date of the race (to avoid the potential impact on changing weather conditions). As a reminder, there may be several racers starting at the same time, it is your responsibility not to draft.

Q: How did you determine the length of the time trials?

A: There are various opinions of the right length. Some want one lap, as they have goals and comparisons on one lap. Others don’t care about the length but want the same distance each race to determine how they improve over the course of the year. Others want longer races, up to and including an hour race. The decision was made to compromise with races ranging from one to four laps, and the first and last race each one lap, for comparison purposes.

Q: Can we have an hour time trial race?

A: While that is a great idea and would be good fun (and could have both yearly and all-time records), that is not part of this race series. It is encouraged that others lead such an effort, preferably on a weekday morning other than the weeks of the current Century Park races.

And for the caveat…this is an unofficial race, no one to help with traffic control. Safety first. If there are any safety issues, a race or a sprint may be neutralized. There is no right of appeal. This is also a race of integrity: drafting in the time trial is banned, you must regroup after each sprint, and it is up to self-report your times / places.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
